Formula used

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1)

This is algebraically identical to the standard amortising loan payment formula.

Example calculation

₹500,000 at 9% over 60 months:

r = 0.09 ÷ 12 = 0.0075

EMI = 500,000 × 0.0075 × 1.0075⁶⁰ ÷ (1.0075⁶⁰ − 1) = ₹10,379

Total payable ≈ ₹622,753, of which ₹122,753 is interest.

What does this result mean?

The EMI is fixed, but early instalments are mostly interest because interest is charged on the outstanding balance, which starts at its maximum. Prepaying reduces that balance immediately and removes all the future interest it would have generated, so prepayments made in the first third of the tenure have the largest effect.
